Fat Soluble vs. Water Soluble Vitamins: Which Are Better for your Skin?

But what exactly are those vitamins, and why does your skin need them? And why do we distinguish between fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins?

What Are Vitamins?

From Medical News Today, "vitamins are organic compounds that people need in small quantities." Each organism needs different vitamin requirements depending on what their body naturally produces. 

Your parents were right when they told you to take your vitamins each day - They are an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. While some vitamins you can get from food and supplements, for optimum skin function it's also wise to look for vitamins in the topical skincare products you choose. 

What Do the Vitamins in Our Skincare Do?

There are 13 currently recognized vitamins, but we'll focus on the main ones found in our formulas:

Vitamin A

This vitamin is essential for eye health. It also helps ensure the heart, lungs, kidneys and other organs function properly. For our purposes, it is important in the growth of all bodily tissues, including the skin. Lastly, it contributes to the "production of sebum, the oil that maintains levels of moisture in the skin and hair."

Vitamin C

Incredibly popular in the skincare world, vitamin C contributes to collagen production, wound healing and acts as an antioxidant. It is popular as a treatment for hyperpigmentation. While usually water-soluble, in our products we use a fat-soluble version of vitamin C that makes its impact long-lasting for your skin. 

Vitamin D

While many of us get our Vitamin D from the sun, if we want to avoid skin damage we can also get vitamin D from our skincare products. This vitamin is important due to its ability to calm inflammation, protect the skin, and improve cell turnover. Not having enough vitamin D can impact your skin negatively, as a dermatologist explains in this article. The poor immune function that can result from deficiency can lead to "weakened skin barrier, increasing dryness and chance of infection," as well as the worsening of conditions such as "acne, eczema and rosacea."

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a "naturally occurring component of healthy skin," according to this info sheet. When supplemented with topical products containing the vitamin, it helps defend from pollution and other environmental stressors.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is known as a healing vitamin. For your face, products with vitamin K will aid in your skin's healing process, "supporting the skin's natural barrier function," according to Elle. The founder of the Organic Pharmacy explains that the compound may also have a positive impact on dark circles and broken capillaries. Lastly, it plays a role in reducing inflammation, redness and swelling.

What's the Difference Between Fat-Soluble and Water-Soluble Vitamins?

Fat-soluble vitamins are those that are dissolvable in fats or oils. Vitamins A, D, E & K are fat-soluble. These have a longer-lasting impact on your body, since it can store fat-soluble vitamins in fatty tissue and liver for days and sometimes months. 

Water-soluble vitamins are (as you might have guessed) dissolvable in water. Vitamin C as well as all B vitamins are water-soluble. Because of this, they do not stay in the body long and cannot be stored, so you need a more regular supply (this is why you would have to apply a vitamin C product daily to have an impact, for example).

Which Is Better for Your Skin?

As we have written about in prior blog posts, we believe in making our skincare formulas as functional as possible; for Mox, that means eliminating any filler ingredients such as water. Because our products don't use water, we only incorporate fat-soluble vitamins - so it's probably no surprise which we prefer.

Since fat-soluble vitamins can stay in the skin tissue for longer, you get more bang for your buck: with less product, you'll see a longer, more enduring effect. Fat-soluble vitamins also mean you'll get a more potent concentration of the vitamin versus diluting them with water. While water-soluble vitamins can have positive impacts on your skin, we believe that there's a clear winner.
